Unlike conventional transformers, which require cooling due to high power, these transformers use ambient air as a cooling and insulation medium.

What are Dry Transformers?

Dry transformers are devices that do not require the use of oil cooling and insulation, unlike conventional transformers, which require cooling due to high power.

These transformers use ambient air as a cooling and insulation medium. Their main function is the same as oil-filled transformers, i.e., to adapt primary voltage levels for use in industries, residences, and various enterprises.

Advantages of Dry Transformers:

Dry transformers offer several advantages compared to conventional oil-filled transformers. In addition to the low maintenance requirement for these equipments, they eliminate the risk of oil leaks, which can cause environmental damage.

They are widely used in various industrial sectors, such as food, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, mining, civil construction, steel mills, among others. Additionally, they also find application for adapting photovoltaic systems.

Testing in Dry Transformers: Ensuring Efficiency

Importance of Routine Tests:

Routine tests on dry transformers aim to ensure their proper operation and safety.

In addition to the common tests performed on transformers, such as the transformation ratio test, winding resistance test, and insulation resistance test, there is also consideration of specific tests for the insulating material used in oil-filled transformers, and the absence of these tests in dry transformers.

Main Tests in Dry Transformers:

Testing in dry transformers involves the following steps:

  1. Transformation Ratio Test: Verifies if the number of turns between windings is in accordance with the design, ensuring that input and output voltages are within specified values.

  2. Winding Resistance Test: Compares calculated values with measured values, identifying problems with poor contact and interruptions.

  3. Insulation Resistance Test: Checks solid insulation levels of transformers between windings and ground.

  4. Applied Voltage Test: Applies a certain voltage to the equipment within the interval determined by the standard, checking for insulation breakdown.

  5. Induced Voltage Test: Applies double the nominal voltage with a minimum frequency of 120 Hz and maximum of 480 Hz, ensuring no disruptive discharges occur.

  6. No-load Loss and Excitation Current Test: Measures losses through nominal voltage and frequency, comparing obtained values with design and standard.

  7. Short-Circuit Loss and Impedance Test: Measures losses through nominal current and frequency, comparing obtained values with design and standard.

  8. Partial Discharge Measurement: Fundamental test for verifying material and process variables during the manufacturing period.
